Alessandro Toffoli

Associate Professor
The University of Melbourne

I have a wealth of experience in ocean and coastal engineering, physical oceanography and air-sea interactions, which includes research, teaching, consultancy, working at the Universities and industry. With a Master degree in Civil Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Turin (Italy) and PhD in Civil Engineering from the K.U. Leuven (Belgium), I went on working in shipping industry (DNV) in Norway, before beginning an academic career at several Universities. Since 2016, I hold an position as Associate Professor in Ocean Engineering at the University of Melbourne (Australia). I am also Visiting Professor at K.U. Leuven (Belgium).

I am a physical oceanographer with expertise in nonlinear and rogue waves, wave breaking, wave turbulence and wave ice interaction. I developed familiarity with an extended range of experimental techniques applied to small and large scale physical experiments, field measurements and a number of numerical techniques. I currently work as research Fellow at the University of Adelaide and I hold a visiting appointment at The University of Melbourne. I studied at Swinburne University of Technology (PhD) and Politecnico di Milano (BSc and MSc).
